ARFL Tightens Betting Rules for Journalists Covering Australian Rules Football

The Australian Rules Football League (ARFL) has reinforced its ethical guidelines, implementing fresh wagering limitations for journalists reporting on the sport within Australia.

Licensed reporters and analysts will now be prohibited from placing wagers on contests they are covering as a component of their employment.

These adjustments become effective this coming Thursday, coinciding with the commencement of the NAB Challenge matches. The ARFL will enforce a five-hour “embargo period” on media personnel, beginning two hours prior to a match and concluding three hours following the final whistle.

A representative for the ARFL elaborated, “It is crucial to understand that if you are employed at the game, you are still permitted to place a wager on the game outside of that five-hour timeframe, such as during the week, or before you access the stadium on game day.”

These novel limitations arise from apprehensions that certain media representatives, once within the stadiums, could obtain team intelligence prior to the 90-minute cutoff when clubs are obligated to submit their final team rosters to the ARFL, potentially leveraging this information for gambling purposes.

It is noteworthy that ARFL personnel are already precluded from wagering on matches.
